Everything Eminem Released in 2017
In 2017, Eminem (Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady) was pretty quiet in the music world until the last month of the year. In December of 2017, he released Revival, his ninth studio album.
During the year, he worked with several artists, performing features on a few notable songs.
Those songs, Eminem’s participation in 2017’s annual BET cypher and the album will all be covered below.
Eminem 2017 Notable Features
From January to November 2017, Eminem did not produce any songs or drop any new studio albums. However, he did feature on a few songs under production by other artists, including up-and-comers. Here are the notable features that he worked on in 2017.
1. Big Sean — “No Favors,” feat. Eminem.
Early in 2017, Big Sean released the album I Decided, featuring Eminem on one of the album’s songs, “No Favors.” Both being Detroit MCs, they are no strangers to collaborating. However, this was the first time that Eminem featured on a song produced by Big Sean. Eminem insults President Donald Trump as well as noted conservative pundit Ann Coulter. This song debuted on the US-version of the Billboard Hot 100 at number 22, even though it was not released as a single.
2. Hall N Nash — “Machine Gun Black,” feat. Eminem.
This song is notable because Eminem supported new talent to his label, Shady Records. The new signees to the label were rappers Conway the Machine and Westside Gunn, both of whom are “Hall N Nash” as a duo. Opting to let this new rap duo shine, Eminem only contributes to the introduction of “Machine Gun Black.”
3. P!nk — “Revenge,” feat. Eminem
“Revenge” is P!nk’s third time collaborating with Eminem, and it is the second song of her 2017 album, Beautiful Trauma. On the song, “Revenge,” Eminem raps about some inventive, humorous ways to exact revenge on one’s ex-lover.
2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher
Every year, BET invites artists to contribute to their Hip-Hop Awards cypher, and Eminem decided to aim his rapping sights straight at President Donald Trump. He rips into the President for how he has mishandled then-current affairs and generally his poor performance as POTUS. The day after the cypher, DJ Caesar (Shade 45 host) dropped the official cypher remix along with its beat, “Calm Before The Storm.”
Eminem and Paul Rosenberg teased the release of the Revival album as early as late October 2017. A billboard ad, a “Revival” website and a promotional video mention numerous Eminem songs from his past works. The album’s title is a fitting entry, as two of his previous studio albums were entitled “Relapse” and “Recovery.” With production on the album running through 2016 and 2017, it was finally released on December 15, 2017, through Shady Records, Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment.
Eminem’s Revival album consists of 19 tracks, with multiple features throughout:
- Walk on Water (Lead single, feat. Beyoncé)
- Chloraseptic (feat. Phresher)
- Untouchable (Promotional single)
- River (Second single, feat. Ed Sheeran)
- Remind Me (Intro)
- Remind Me (Fourth single)
- Revival (Interlude) (feat. Alice and the Glass Lake)
- Like Home (feat. Alicia Keys)
- Bad Husband (feat. X Ambassadors)
- Tragic Endings (feat. Skylar Grey)
- Nowhere Fast (Third single, feat. Kehlani)
- Need Me (feat. P!nk)
- In Your Head
Revival received mixed reviews from rap and music critics. Notable issues were its extensive sampling of rock music, a large number of pop artists being featured on the album, and its failure to show a clear conceptual focus. Metacritic’s normalized review from a composite of mainstream publication reviews assigned it a score of 50, denoting “mixed or average review.”
While it did not garner much critical praise, Revival did well on the music charts. It hit number one on the Billboard charts of the US, the UK, Canada, Finland and Australia.
